When I last visited this operation in 1982, green SD40-2s were replacing the huge green electric locomotives on the road trains, just as the yellow GP39-2s had retired the yellow electrics in the pit. (KCC first sampled diesels in the pit with leased UP and D&RGW GP30s.) But the road had just built a new engine house at Copperton at that time, to handle those diesels. The SDs eventually went to the British Columbia Railway while some of the GPs were sold to the Katy (going eventually to the UP through merger,) with their cabs cut down to a slightly lower than normal height. Kennecott also had at least one standard cab GP39-2 for local service, painted green like the SDs.
