Rio Grande 5402 was wrecked a few miles west of this location in 1989. Here's a rundown of it's heritage after the accident: D&RGW 5402 was wrecked on 7 February 1989 near Pando (Tennessee Pass), Colorado; sold to National Railway Equipment, Dixmoor, Illinois, in June 1991; wreck damage repaired, including using the long hood from a standard SD40-2, completed in early 1993; leased to CP as NREX 5402 in May 1993; sold to CP as CP 5449 in June 1994 (in an all-white paint scheme, not CP red); to St. Lawrence & Hudson (STLH) 5449 in January 1998; sold to East Coast Motive Power in 1999; sold to First Union Rail (FURX) in 1999, rebuilt by GEC-Alstom with a different long hood, using different radiator section and different dynamic braking section, completed as FURX 3021 in February 2000, used in national lease service. (a BIG thanks to Don Strack for providing this information).
