I had a surprise encounter with the 101 in Alexandria, VA, on the July 4th weekend of 1986, spotting its heritage gold road name peeking out between boxcars one evening. The next morning, it was the second unit on a southbound freight, which I first saw at the station and then watched it climb Franconia Hill, along with three GP40-2s. The beautiful old Geep put on quite a show!
