This rail was made in Illinois in May 1952 as the stamp indicates. It doesn't necessarily mean that the rail was laid at this time.

The Milwaukee Road went out of business in 1985, 33 years after the rail itself was manufactured. This is mainline rail, as you can tell by the well kept track structure. I would highly doubt that the railroad would install 33 year old rail out on the main at any point.
