Christmas week of 1977 or1978 I had been out all day with the "Best Friend of Charleston" for a Christmas parade at Goldston, NC only to return to my home point of Greensboro, NC to find this unit derailed and leaning at about a 45 degree angle just off the GBO fuel rack. Luckily, it was coupled to a SR GP30. Both units were equipped with tight-lock couplers (SOU's standard for locomotives) and I am convinced this is all that prevented the 5122 from turning over. Rerailed the next day with the Spencer, NC derrick & that's another story.
