The second car (behind the first baggage car) seems to be
some sort of a flat car with containers on it (or is it an illusion
due to the angle of the photo?).

The Santa Fe was carrying mail or express in containers on a few of the trains but the service was new and the containers shiny so as not to mar the consist.
