That scene just breaks my heart.

These two must have some type of frame damage - they don't look that bad externally
|
Too sas huh. The engines 6257, 6259 and 6265 don't looks like badly damaged to be scrapped. I don't believe these engines will be scrapped and I hope they come back to the main tracks soon as possible.

It's to bad these units are going to the scrapper, as previously commented they probably suffered frame damage or during impact the engine mounts let loose allowing the the single shaft (which runs from the compressor to the main generator) to damage the main generator, the replacement and repair would be more than the unit is worth. I've seen this scenario w/ a CP SD40-2 that had an impact of only 16mph, the unit was saved but at first scrapping was considered

Isn't the compressor on the free end of the engine, with the generator on the opposite end?
|
While these engines don't look too bad, they are so old and worn out that it probably just makes sense to go ahead and scrap them. CN has already retired numerous SD40's, including scrapping several that were not wreck damaged.

The IC units are nothing but a scrap pile now. I was there today and only the motor and frame rest in the dirt on both units.
|
Nice shot, SD40-3 have some life but not much on the CN in general, IC SD40-2 are not running at all? now.

Just Sad. Breaks my heart to see good locomotives scrapped just because they are 'too old'.
|
Man, this makes me wish I was a millionaire so I could airlift these to my mansion. Haha, I can dream right? Interesting photo.

Oh dear god! At least IC 6071 was saved (Monticello Railroad Museum, Monticello, Illinois). One of the IC's SD70s should be sold to the Illinois Railway Museum for their lack of any IC locomotives, save for a 2-4-4T and a 2-6-0.
