That trailing SD24 is one of three ex-EMD demos, 7200-7202 (to UP 445-446,) that were built with Southern Pacific options and gray and scarlet paint. Note the low headlight and blank oscillating light brackets on the long hood. They also were the only SD24s to sport GP20-style, flare top, fans, and along with Kennecott Copper's one unit, the only four SD24s with the SD18-style radiator grill.

I must amend my first comment, as it should have read "the only four 'production' SD24s" with the SD18 grill. The demonstrator SD24, EMD 5579, which was a high hood unit and also ended up on UP, as their 448, had the SD18 grill as well.

This photo shows what UP was using on the East Los Angeles hump yard just prior to the completion of yard slugs S4 and S5 in January and March 1976. Yard slug S4 was paired with SD24 402, and yard slug S5 was paired with SD24 446. When the East Los Angeles hump yard was opened in early 1974, the railroad initially used sets of SD24s and GP9Bs.

The previous posts have covered the history of these units. I'll simply say this is a great photo, Joe !
