I think it's from an accident on 12.14.94. The whole pass was closed for quite a while. My wife drove the pass at that time and wound up driving down the back side of the mountain. I found photos and a description at http://www.pbase.com/intermodal/1994_cajon_pass_accident.

ATSF GP60M 144 was involved in a runaway accident on Dec. 14, 1994 where is collided with the rear end of a UP coal train.

Whoops, I meant I passed through Cajon on Amtrak's Desert Wind in 96 or 97. This engine was was loaded onto a flat car sitting on a siding. I did a little research and found a runaway on December 14th 1994 involving GP60M #144. http://www.qstation.org/GP60M_135/
