Those were the days. The GP38 was (or became) TAG 80, the "John A Chambliss". John III and his son John IV were my neighbors on Elder Mountain just outside Chattanooga during my second tour of duty at Chattanooga Diesel Shop. I was told that the number 80 was in honor John senior's 80th birthday. Good work Tom!

John senior was a principal in the TAG organization. After Southern acquired the TAG, the 80 was sent to, I believe, Southeastern Specialties in Jacksonville, Fla for application of dynamic brakes and other modifications. The unit spent much of its life on SOU working in DeButts Yard at Chattanooga and as Dalton, GA switcher. The 80 eventually became SOU 2879, later NS 2879, and currently resides at TVRM.

Great image, Tom. Made my first railroad photo in November 1970 (in Auburn, AL), so just missed TAG. Easily makes my Top 10 bad timing list.
