I believe gray box is an "OILER" to help long freights negotiate curves easier and with less friction. Anyone else know for sure? Jim Note dark oil on tracks in front of loco. Jim

It's a greaser. It helps to reduce wear on the curves. As a side effect it also reduces adhesion for trains climbing the grade over them. Especially those old EMDs which couldn't hold the rail anyway, hitting a greaser at the wrong time at the wrong spot would often stall a train.
