I recall when asking about this very "dirt pattern" "back in the day" a crewman explained to me that at Washington DC the Gs ( with pantograph lowered so that they had no electrical power ) were pulled through the passenger car washer, whose lines of vertical brushes did not reach to the nose areas. It seems no other effort to clean the units was made.
