This photo was taken at Doncaster Works, known locally as 'The Plant' after 'Silver Link' had been fitted with a speed indicator during its final General Repair in Feb-April 1961. It was only to remain in service until condemned on 29th December 1962. As LNER No 2509 it was the first of the class entering service on 7th September 1935 in readiness to haul the first 'Silver Jubilee' express between Newcastle and London and return on the 30th of the same month.

Thank you, thank you. When I was at school in Altofts, we went on a three day trip to London, I didn't know the locomotive until we got to Kings Cross and there was Silver Link! The A4's were the dream loco to a 1950's trainspotter (I was born 1948). My trip was about 1958. At that age I used to go on my own to York to sneak into the sheds (now the Museum) and stand at the end of the platforms. Mum was OK with it! I also used to ride the canal barges too. (She did have issues with that)
