BUT, the diesel units were not Swiss-built. They were built by Werkspoor of Holland. I think the Swiss manufacturers know how to cope with snow!

I believe you are correct about the Siss constyuction. Snow was not the problem; cold was. North Bay and Timmins often get as cold as -40C in January and February.

The problem the Dutch units had was in the absence of mechanics that understood them. The Ontario Northland shop crew gave up on the original units because they just could not get parts or meaningful technical support on them. They were far from new when they arrived in North Bay, and were in poor condition, too. An effort to obtain new engines for them failed. It is another example of economy backfiring on a buyer's intentions.
