This photo very clearly shows an operating oddity of the Southern Railway, in that the older high millage unit, the SD-24 is placed in the center position of the lash up. In an earlier time period the newer SD-24's would have had a Fairbanks Morse Trainmaster as the center unit. the Idea was to keep the older unit with worn wheel flanges between the newer and better maintained units. We saw the same thing occur on the C.N.O. & T.P. between Atlanta and Cincinnati in the same late seventies time period.

Interesting info Ky CatFan... I remember seeing SD-24s splicing two 35s frequently but never knew it was because of the flange wear issue.
