I love seeing these old CRIP photos, but holy smokes that U-boat looks like it is in REALLY bad shape.

The 231 wound up in Waterville, Maine in the Maine Central's boneyard, where the Maine elements further enhanced 231's appearence. It was among the first of the parts queens scrapped, having been picked clean early in 1981. The Conrail GP7 represented one of the ways the Rock tried to save itself from the inevitable. The Silvis shops did well, but the business was not there, in sufficient quantities to help save the railroad. But, we know they gave it their best shot.
