This shot is very educational. I always wondered just how British couplings actually work. The center portion (between the hooks) looks very fragile compared to the very heavy couplings used in the U.S. and Canada.

That's one of the reasons you don't see 150 car coal trains in the UK or countries that use buffer-and-chain couplers.
