Both trains are displaying rear red marker lights, which at first glance indicates that would be the rear end of both trains. The dimmed headlight on the left train would suggest it is in the lead, though some railroads use rear headlights on dim as a marker. Neither train is displaying ditch lights, which perhaps suggets rear end operation. There appears to be a human in the control compartment of the left train; though that could easily be a trainman rather than an engineer. No money wagered here, toss up...
