The caption alone merits a comment! And, looks like now, I have a prototype for the models I've improperly stored over the years.

Interesting challenge to identify. Obviously EMD due to trucks and fuel tank. But the arrangement of the air reservoir, the polling pocket and the drawbar housing can help.

Can we collectively sleuth the model and road of this unit?

Side skirt, fuel tank, and air tanks say early GP, something from the 7, 9, or 18 series. The best way to tell would be to get a frame number and look that up.

The fuel tank skirt and tank arrangement would indicate it was a GP7/9/18/20. But the pilot arrangement is quite different.

Nice shot, very well "framed."

This could be the running gear for a new Gen Set locomotive. All of what is here will be needed for the new locomotive.

After scrutinizing several shots of GP7s, 9s, 10s, 18s and 20s side by side, I'm fairly sure it is not a GP10 or a GP18 and I'm about 98% sure it's not a GP20. For me, it's between a GP7 and a GP9, and even between those I'd probably roll the dice and go with GP9. Nifty shot and a fun "game" to play...

Looks like a flatcar on steroids.

Please see RailPictures Photo ID: 198142. Railpower RP20bd built in Dansville, New York. States that new Norfolk Southern unit used the frame of Southern Railway #2830. I hope this helps.
