I believe that this contraption is called a "velocipe". I saw a drawing of one in a dictionary once upon a time...Sometimes they were 3-wheeled with the rider's weight on one rail or the other.

How cool is that? I wonder if I could build one out of an old bicycle? Wouldn't recommend playing on the main line with one of these, but how fun would that be?
