Another nice one! You're becoming quite the MOW guy around here.

Did this back in the 70's on a five-man crew with portable units...welded from Hope, Idaho to Laural, Montana through the most beautiful country. Pre-heated the rail ends with a large propane burner, welding up to a hundred joints a day. We blew out the metal fractures caused by long-time wear on the rail ends. Then we built up the weld and ground the joint, then champhered the ends. Long hours sitting over the weld and heated rail in the summers was very hard work. Usually away from homes for the week, living in Uni-vans two workers to a van. The boss had his own. These crews were gradually replaced by welding units on trucks, then ribbon steel replaced the need for crews. Worked on Burlington Northern Railroad.

Excellent composition! The variety of light in this photo makes it really compelling. Great eye, Dave.

I am a welder and have to tell you that even when working shoulder to shoulder with others welding can be a very lonely job, once you flip that helmet down you are in your own world. It really provides you with lot of time to ponder.
