They aren't in use occasionally anymore. In January an LAJ bulletin stated that all four of these units have been removed from service, being replaced by the GP units acquired from BNSF.
It's a shame to see them wasting away, but they had quite a long life.

One of the LAJ employees told us one had been used the week before we visited. It would have been nice to see it operate, as it sounds as if it was the last time it would be used.
