I'm betting this was either the "Asheville Special" or "Carolina Special" from Greensboro to Asheville. Very interesting to see a dome car on a Southern train. The scenery on this run would justify its use as the train got into the mountains.

Another comment about that dome car if I may. The Southern did not purchase these directly from the Wabash. The two domes were not alike, with one being a Budd car and the other a steel car that was painted. These cars were gained as part of the equipment that came with the purchase of the Central of Georgia railroad. I have modeled the painted steel car number 1613 from photos taken in Lexington, Kentucky. It was on a special train that ran to Louisville, Kentucky behind the Texas & Pacific steam engine number 610. All that the local Southern Railway people would say about this Special move, was that former Kentucky Govenor, Edward T. (Ned) Breathett who was then Vice President Legal of Southern Railway was involved in the special move. Other cars in the consist were Mr. Breathett's Buisness Car and a very old heavy weight sleeping car. Also odd was that there were only a few stainless steel cars probably also sleepers . Even though steam powered, this definately was not a railfan trip. To model the 1613, I used an AHM undecorated steel dome, painting the car coach green with the roof black, striping and lettering gold as on the photos.
