Great shot, but I don't understand the benefit of doing this. Anyone care to elaborate?

They are designed for high speed intermodal trains on the BNSF Transcon. An ES44AC with two TM's cut out produce the same tractive effort as an ES44DC with all traction motors cut in.

Sounds like an interesting concept from GE. I guess we'll have to wait and see how well it works.
