What surprises me the most in this excellent picture is the black layers separating each fall of snow; a good indicator of air pollution depositing (maybe?)

My guess is dust blowing in the wind, deposited in the snow, and more layers of snow gave the interesting strata layers look.
I have never before seen a shot like this before. very cool!
