Prior to the Rio Grande (which by then was Southern Pacific,) being merged into the Union Pacific, I don't believe the UP ran any coal trains over D&RGW property. However, during that time frame, the Utah Railway was operating their coal trains with leased UP SD40-2s on the point, while Utah's own power was relegated to mid-train helper sets. When I was out there in 1981 and '82, the Utah still had Alco RSD5s, DL600Bs, and DL702s comprising those helper sets. With all three railroads included, Chris' picture does capture the transition of the railroad quite well.
