That is not an Ex-BNSF unit. EMD diverted the BNSF spec units to BHP to fill their order quick. Those units never made it to BNSF.

Josh, it depends on what you mean by ex BNSF. If BNSF owned them (even on paper) and sold to BHP, they are therefore ex BNSF on paper. Doesn't even matter what they were painted for (or not). Debate as you will, you could argue either side.

A source close to EMD explained that it was the "production slots" that BNSF gave up to BHP so that they could get locomotives delivered quickly. While these units were built to BNSF specs in order to be produced right away, they were never BNSF locomotives. To say that this "would have been" BNSF 9184 is most likely correct, as opposed to "ex" BNSF 9184.
