The soft English back lighting. The perfect plume somehow separated from the locomotive. The gold grass on the left. The cow on the right. The fireman leaning out his window. Grainy, soft painterly texture. The classic 3/4 angle British railway painting perfectly executed but in a photograph. I have just counted the ways in which I am flabbergasted by Mr. Armitage's image.
