This is a branch of the Northern Pacific Railway, laid there in the 1880's. I worked on a section out of Florence that covered this line from Missoula to Darby, which has a wye to turn the engines around. In the 60's many of these fields grew sugar beets which were hauled from here, the Bitterroot Valley, to a sugar beet factory in Missoula. I helped pull ties that were hued out on two sides from hickory and other hard woods. We did track alignment with shovels and bars, digging the ballast away from the ties then heaving in unison with a verbal "yo" from the foreman. There were four men in the section. Loved the work!
