Several miles back down this line somewhere about the 13 mile post, in a little community called Winona is where I developed a love for RR. I was about age 3 or 4 now this would have been around the late 1980s & early 90s. The train would usually pass through at about 4pm dragging a line of empties up to Devonia, and at about 10:30 or 11pm that night it would rumble back down the river at a blistering 10 mph headed back to onieda. The train would usually stop at the church in Winona and do a crew change, and my grandpa would take me over to see the action where he also knew most of the local crews. They would always offer to let me go up in the cab, set in the engineer seat and blast the horn a few times. The standard power for this line was normally 3 or 4 NS and ex Southern GP38-2 high hood units. This started a facination that lasted over twenty years and still going!
