Nose headlight or lack there of, recessed vs external ditch/red lights, and the F40PH-2/F40PH-2C says there is probably an internal difference as well. Neat shot.

The F40PH-2C is a longer version of the F40PH, as it was designed to accommodate a separate diesel to supply the HEP. EMD built the first stretched examples for Boston/MBTA, while Morrison-Knudeson provided cloned versions to MBTA and CalTrain. CalTrain, along with NJTransit and Metro North, also had some F40s rebuilt with separate HEP engines. That project expanded the carbody onto the rear anticlimber, eliminating the rear platform, but the overall locomotive length remained the standard for a straight F40PH.

Altoona shops has stretched the frames of some of these as well. Metro-North, units 4191 - 4194 (4 units) received Caterpillar HEP, 1-00 - 3-04. F40PH2-CAT. N.J.T. 4113 - 4129 (17 units) also F40PH2-CAT. Done 9-96 - 9-98.
