John, I have really enjoyed this series on the L&N. The bell on the short hood is a new concept to me.

John your pictures are great! The bell and extra lights on the short hood are indicative of Monon heritage. Those lights were actually on the C628's and were transferred to the 420's upon their arrival.

What the second commenter means, is the lights on the front of the short hood were on the Monon's Alco C628s, not the L & N C628s. The Monon found the big 628s to be too hard in their track. The Monon C 628's were traded for C 420s including two steam generator equipped, high short hooded 420s for use on Louisville,Ky. to Chicago, Ill. passenger trains. The Monon C 628s ended up on the Lehigh Valley where they were called "Snowbirds" for their white paint scheme.

The C628's that were resold to Lehigh Valley were painted in the cornell red only the original ordered C628's were painted in white. The ex Monon engines were red , do not believe any were every painted white due to them very hard to keep clean and LV changing thier paint schemes.
