It's great to see these still operating after all these years. I got to ride behind one of these at Avon Army Signal Depot, east of Lexington, Kentucky. The military base was having an Open House Tour. They had a flat car with a wooden railing around it, and farm gates in the center on each side. The train was used to move visitors from one display area to the next. This would have been in the about nineteen fifty five, as I was nine or ten years old. These units have been repainted as the government will not allow their sold or donated locomotives to retain their military markings. The only museum that is an exception to this rule, is located at Fort Eustes, Virginia, at The Army Transportation Museum. Please note the Baldwin handrails on the hood sides, and the Military added hand railings with toeboards along the walkways. These railings and toeboards were added in the early seventys, shortly after the creation of OSHA.
