Love the mood here -- a great one, John!

After looking at the clues in this picture, I deduce this is an afternoon shot, because the GG-1 powered train is moving toward Pennsylvania Station. The track with the wye switch, in the left foreground, is one of two Long Island R.R. ramps that allow freights to reach the Montauk Branch from local yards located in the Sunnyside area. The other LIRR ramp, barely visible in the murkiness, has a freight on it, led by an Alco switcher, while another Alco end-cab, a Pennsy unit, has a cut of passenger cars just adjacent to the departing passenger train. Directly above the steam plume from the GG-1 is a Flushing IRT train, seen climbing out of Hunter's Point Avenue Station. The PRR passenger train seems to have lots of sleepers on the head end, but it doesn't look like the Broadway's consist. To think, I was nine years old when John recorded this bit of history!

I want to thank J.C. for his sharp eyes once again. Not sure of the time of day these were taken, I asked John if he could remember after I had uploaded them. After pondering it for a minute, he said it was most likely afternoon when he shot this set of slides, so I have changed the captions to reflect that. I wondered if anyone could ID the building in the haze in between the high rises? Is it the Empire State Building? Personally, this is one of my favorites in this series, the pic has a real mood to it. And now that J.C. has identified all the little gems seek out, I like it even more.
