The Family Lines was a marketing scheme, the railroads were under one name but not officially merged together and still ran independently. They did merge in 1983 with the creation of Seaboard System.

The railroads that Frank is talking about would be Seaboard, Louisville & Nashville, Clinchfield, Western Railway of Alabama, and Georgia Railroad. Chesapeake & Ohio and Baltimore & Ohio had become Chessie System, but were not merged to the above lines yet. Seaboard was it's self a merger of Seaboard Air Line and Atlantic Coast Line.
