ICG 7916 was originally built as Illinois Central EMD GP7 8965 (serial no. 17748, frame no. 6497-8). ICG 7916 is actually a GP8 rebuilt from IC GP7 8965 in 1978. IC/ICG GP8s were assigned numbers in the 7700-, 7800- (only four GP8s received numbers in the 7800-number series), and 7900-number series, whereas IC/ICG GP10s were assigned numbers in the 8000-, 8100-, 8200-, 8300-, and 8400-number series. ICG GP11 locomotives received numbers in the 8700-number series (ICG 8701-8753).
