Why is there a viaduct for the railroad? Is there something that prevents the train from going through the field?

Two words, flood plain.

Affirmative, the Ohio River. This area is in a "horseshoe" bend of the Ohio and floods from both sides, usually the west side (which would be to the left in the above photo) floods first. The water was encroaching from the west when this shot was taken and water surrounded the viaduct in some of the low places.

This is a terrible flood plain. The Ohio River is only a stones throw away from the fly-over. The engines are just seconds away from actually crossing the river itself. This track elevation has been in place since the late 1800's.
