Please pardon my ignorance. What is the purpose of the sections of track between the main rails?

To answer Chris' question, those are known as guard rails. They are intended to keep any derailed equipment in line with the track structure, to prevent it from striking, damaging and possibly, knocking down the bridge. As for Matt's picture, the lighting is absolutely spectacular, and it was genius shooting the train before it entered upon, or crossed the bridge. While the sun angle spotlights the train, the bridge is fully presented as well. In my opinion, this image belongs on the cover of Trains magazine! A great job. Matt!
