That's the train number, which is why it differs. It's an SP tradition, as the SP ran the commuters until Caltain took over in the mid to late 1980's, and they always put the train number on the front number boards.

The number on the front of the MP36 is the train's ID number. We only put the engine's locomotive number when it's done with service.

As for the comments on 924 being the train number - this train was actually Number 135 (as noted above), running right on schedule. Aren't Caltrain 900-series train numbers used for dead-head extras and other non-revenue moves? This was a Monday morning, so maybe the locomotive was used for a weekend extra train numbered 924 and they just forgot to change the display come commute time?
