While IC 6006 may well have been upgraded to SD40-2 specifications, it was built as an IC-exclusive SD40A, which is a 3000 h.p. SD40 provided on a longer SDP45 frame, for increased fuel capacity. Note the extra carbody space between the last tall hood door (location of the first "6" in the road number) and the radiator, and a fuel tank that extends well aft of the air resevoir. As built, the IC SD40As were equipped dynamic brakes, nose-mounted headlights, with red and white signal lights between the number boards and "L"-shaped engineer windshields. Delivery colors were IC's then-current orange and white scheme. Some SD40As were sold to the Soo Line prior to the CP takeover. (To address similar fuel capacity needs, the Erie-Lackawanna ordered 3600 h.p., 20-cylinder, SDP45s without the steam generators, because the longer frame permitted greater fuel capacity over that of the standard SD45.
