I don't know if this is still the case, but I remember being told by some CAGY crews that 601 was never officially retired. The locomotive was maintained in full working order, and its engine was "turned over" about once every six months or so to keep things lubricated. The reason for this (according to the crew) was the company at the time wanted a "backup" locomotive in case it was ever needed. Though the presence of the CF7's and Geeps largely obsoleted this need. The practice remained though. Also, I believe 601 was the first DRS 6-5-1500 in operation anywhere in the United States. I know CAGY (then the C&G) bought the first run of these Baldwin locomotives. I forget if it was Baldwin's first diesel, or the first of the class though.

Is she still there on display? C and G Baldwin #606 is at the Illinois Railway Museum and still runs at times. They also have a Baldwin Centercab (MN & S) there as well.

Far as I know, she's still there. I think they recently repainted her.
