That is a rare photo - in so many ways!
A rare and GREAT photo, too.
UP usually does not have thier engines belch out a storm like that, I'm
surprised they even allowed it, let alone endorsed it. Heck of a show!

This was back when they really did smoke (Coal Fired). As for the EPA, there are no regulations concerning historical equipment :).......yet.

As for the smoke, I think there were a couple of factors. Only 3985 was burning coal, 8444 burned oil (I think it always has) and is this is in the pre-Steve Lee days. If I recall correctly, the film crew told me they worked for the SP.

I agree this is a classic photo. If only Norfolk Southern would've let 611 & 1218 when they were running smoke like the 8444 & 3985 are in this picture
