When you get to much pressure in the main reservoir the best way to reliever the pressure is to open the main reservoir hose on the front of the locomotive just enough to relieve the pressure.

Great shot!

I don't think Stuart got it quite right. It must have been llooouuuudddd!!

The mind boggles at the pressure required to cause that outcome.

Thanks for posting this. Was wondering what was wrong with it as it was sitting there for over a week. Went by here on a train over the weekend and i could not tell what was wrong .

Actually, I doubt the problem was ice related. There was a recall on the air reservoirs around 2004 for this very problem (they began exploding). Those which were inspected and passed the inspection were painted with a blue dot of spray paint. Those which failed were replaced (replacements wore lite gray paint). For photos, look at http://xs412.xs.to/xs412/07084/defect2.jpg Apparently this one slippled past the inspection process. Its just one more hazard out there for fans and employees alike to be aware of.

Holy Cow!!! Look at how it raised the floor on the loco.
