Great shot of the summit Ralph.

Hey Ralph, excellent photo of the older joint DRGW Kaiser coal train, Nice semi-different angle there(a little to the right of the usual West Summit railfan photo perch spot. I bet you were stoked to see those rear ATSF helpers peak around the corner in the background pushing the short (for today) coal train. They framed into the shot nicely showing the whole train.

Before I got this telephoto shot, the train was stopped for an air test at Summit before descending Cajon Pass and I got a nice 3/4 shot of the train at ground level. I then had time to get to the higher elevation for the telephoto shot. The sun angle was perfect and the clear blue sky made an excellent Kodachrome. This telephoto view is more dramatic since it shows the entire train, and the Summit station sign. Solid sets of DRGW SD45s were somewhat uncommon on these unit trains. See my Photo Article - In Search of the Super C and a "Bicentennial" - for another of my favorite Summit photos from the 1970s.

I think that's a helper pocket.
