...ok, I have to ask, what is a "watercannon" train?

These are the RHTTs (Rail Head Treatment Trains) that operate throughout the autumn (fall) and early winter to clear away dead leaves and treat the rail with 'sandite' - an adhesive sand-like material to improve wheel/rail adhesion. The treatment wagons start each year in their bright glossy blue livery and after a few weeks they are covered in sandite! So are the locos!

Incorrect, it sprays water only and at a very high pressure, hence the term "watercannon". I have found a good description of the observable equipment differences between sandite-applying wagons and watercannon ones: "The sandite units have three tank modules and three cubicles. The water only have one cubicle (the pump) and more tank modules."

As for the 2007 leaf clearing season, ALL trains involved with this work, whether Sandite or Water Cannon equipped are officially class as RHTTs - Rail Head Treatment Trains.
