Fascinating subject and absolutely wonderful lighting.

Fine job as usual Alan. For some of us Yanks, who are a bit soft on Garratt history, is that a 0-4-0+0-4-0?

This photo has fantastic color, composition, lighting and a timeless subject. One of your best!

Thanks for posting this Alan. I've been wanting to see this engine for years, even went to the NRM in York, only to discover that it had been shipped off for restoration!

Hi Mark and all,
K1 was indeed the first Garratt and is an 0-4-0+0-4-0 Tank with compound cylinder arrangement. Unlike any other Garratt the cylinders were placed at the inner ends of the power bogies, this was not popular with the train crew as the cylinders were directly under the cab, made them a bit too hot! All other garratts had the cylinders on the outer ends. Following use in Tasmania it ceased working in 1929. The builders, Beyer Peacock of Manchester planned to use the machine as some sort of advert? and repatriated the loco in 1948, but little was done. The Ffestiniog Railway in Wales obtained the engine in 1966, it was finally restored to traffic, with a new boiler 38 years later! I'll try and get another shot of it on the database today.
