Slightly visible in the lower background is the channel that the Lompoc Pier once stood within as it served cargo ships before being destroyed by storms. Just south of this location is the famous Honda Point where a squadron of US Navy Destroyers scuttled themselves upon the rocks in heavy fog in the largest peacetime disaster the Navy has encountered. Sailors were picked up by train and taken away from the site of the disaster on these very rails. http://www.answers.com/topic/honda-point-disaster
