Awesome catch and shot, Ryan! That's a really nice looking engine. Nick Hart

Wow!

Out of all the heritage locomotives I like this one the best.

Ryan -- Does catching this sharp looking engine make up for the Dodgers loss to the dreaded Giants last night? Amazingly, I've already seen some posts on other sites from those who think this is ugly! Great job, UP, and great job, Ryan.

Not too shabby. Thanks for sharing so quickly.

I think most of us had the idea of UP using the daylight colors ;)

The question is - will this look right in Dunsmuir, CA? Nice catch Ryan! I'm sure we'll be seeing alot more, congrats on being the first on RP!

Absolutely stunning!

I think this SD70Ace would look great running with SP GS-4 # 4449!
Posted by Ray Chuang on August 19, 2006
I like this locomotive--it looks stunning, just like the GS-4's, Alco PA's and EMD E units painted in this livery. It does look a bit garish, but then, we are talking about one of the most famous color liveries ever on an American passenger train, the famous SP "Daylight" trains that ran between northern and southern Cailfornia. I thought that UP would paint UP 1996 in the famous "Black Widow" livery, but that would not have stood out clearly given that the Black Widow livery is actually quite dark in color.

You may have been the first with the 1996 on TO, but Craig Walker beat you on RP...... by about ten years and three months!!! Seriously, glad to be able to see the shot full size. It looks good! -- Joe H.
Posted by John Witthaus on August 19, 2006
The combination of Black Widow and Daylight schemes was genius! The black and silver contrast perfectly with the orange and red.

Joseph Hinson posted, "You may have been the first with the 1996 on TO, but Craig Walker beat you on RP...... by about ten years and three months!!!" Wha...? Oh, yeah, that shot of the UP's SD40-2 for the Atlanta Olympics! (I had to search RailPictures to find the reference...) But this Daylight one is so much better!!!

That is a beautiful loco!

That SP heritage paintscheme looks great, great catch Ryan

Great catch Ryan. Will have to toss a coin to decide which Hertitage Unit I like best, this or UP 1995. Heads CNW, Tails SP - Best of 3...Best of 5... ;-)

WOW! Definately eye catching, I will agree with you Ryan on the modern looking GS-4.
Posted by Cheesie 2101 on August 19, 2006
Now if only MTH would come out with all the Heritage enignes......
Posted by Joe Callahan on August 19, 2006
Thanks Ryan for the beautiful shot. As a lifelong SP fan I must say UP did this right.
Posted by Evan Schilling on August 19, 2006
WOW Thats is an eye catcher! I never saw UP doing that! Now thats my favorite Heritage Unit.

Looks awesome, SP Black Widow and Daylight. If you look it is patterned almost exactly after the steam locomotives and less like the diesels. It looks pretty BNSF-like on the thumbnail at first glance, I almost missed it, but it's a whole lot better than the BNSF's version of the ACe. Well done UP on the Heritage Locomotives!

This scheme really combines all of SP's paint schemes into one. Thanks for sharing!

She looks GOOD! 8-)

Wow!That is a nice looking unit except for 2 small defects in the paint. The UP on the cab and the shield out back but wow!Stunning!Hope someone comes out with this on a N scale or HO scale model.Would love to have a Black Light SD70.

She's gaudy and georgious Ryan :-) You could see her coming from 100 miles.
Posted by Gary Miller on August 20, 2006
What a knockout! What if all railroads thought enough of their profession to present themselves so dramatically? Could Union Pacific do one for the Baltimore & Ohio!!!!

Great photo. I love Daylight paint scheme. Bravo Ryan

Tower 55 will have all the Heritage Units in HO scale, including UP 4141.
Posted by Stefan on August 20, 2006
Ryan, A nice photo! At the risk of getting flamed, I guess I'm the only one who hates it! Quasi is right...what the heck is all that stuff going on the front? And aluminum trucks and underframe....gag! I also fail to see the "Black Widow" scheme resemblance as mentioned by others. What a visual mess! SP traditionalists are cringing...cheers Stefan

Yuck, the white lines are too thick. I am starting to wonder whether all these "heritage" schemes are more symbols of UP conquest than respect for former roads. Whats wrong with painting one unit in each ORIGINAL paintscheme as an act of memorial?
Posted by coorsdrinkr on August 20, 2006
It surely is a beautiful looking paint scheme BUT why didn't UP clean the rust off the wheels?
Posted by on August 20, 2006
I really do not grasp the negativity toward the Heritage units. With the 4141, UP has painted a total of seven brand new engines and none of them were Armor Yellow and grey. So where's the problem in that? -- Joe H.
Posted by Paul Hebert on August 20, 2006
The wheels are almost always rusty. They are never painted as they are inspected for cracks, so they will rust.
Posted by BNSF85 on August 20, 2006
Great job on the photos. This engine to me is exactly like the Rio Grande Heritage engine. The paint job is great except for the nose. The mountain on the nose ruined that engine for me and so did the nose on this engine. They should have done an all Daylight engine not whatever that black scheme is on the nose. It is not Black Widow because on the Black Widow scheme the nose is Silver with orange stripes not black with red stripes. I am a SP fan and this engine is a huge letdown, UP could have done far better.

At first glance I didn’t like this new locomotive one bit, but now that I look at it a little more I have to say it’s not to bad. I still think that the MoPac and the Katy are the best ones out there. But hey, no one will be missing this one as it pounds the rail of the former SP.
Posted by Steve Phillips on August 22, 2006
Mr. Hinson needs to understand that this is just another way UP is getting their ducks (aka heritage painted locomotives) in a row for the court cases on licensing. Outside of the photo being well composed I find the subject quite an insult to the memory of my favorite railroad. Hopefully, the future management of UP will spend more time and resourses to inprove their infrastructure and proper operation of their railroad and less time with this tact of going after businesses that are not in the same industry as them.

Hard to please everyone: love her or leave her, after all, thanks UP.

I think this is one of the best looking heritage engines. I like this one, 1988, and 1995 the best. Great shot!
