Thanks for the comments everyone! I took this photo from a bridge along Skyline Drive in Guernsey State Park. Indeed, the trench does look much deeper in person.

How long was the tunnel before it be came a trench?

Awesome I was just there like 2 days ago!! BNSF track crews where working on that switch there in the distance.
