Well in all reality the DASH 8's weren't originally designed for passenger operation, they were actually tacked on to an order from Santa Fe for B40-8W's. Amtrak needed power badly, so they just chopped the block to 12 cylinders to make room for the HEP equipment and geared the engines for 110.
